FROZEN LAKES IN INDIA
The Himalayas are the witness of some great lakes of India, Many of which is still undiscovered. To reach at high altitude level, it requires lot of efforts and also need will but the sight of these majestic high altitude frozen lakes is unbelievable and give an amazing and magical landscape. Checkout few of the highest lakes to climb there and turn the word to experience it.
Suraj Tal
Suraj Tal is the origin point of Bhaga River. Bhaga River merge in Chandra downstream in Tandi to become Chandrabhaga. it happens just below the Baralacha Pass at an altitude of 4890m. It is one of the highest lakes in India. Suraj Tal also carries some religious importance for locals of the area. Best time to visit lake either at the time of sun rising or the time of sun setting.
Location: 65 kms from Keylong and below Baralacha La.
Gurudongmar Lake
Gurudongmar Lake is officially the highest lake in Indian Himalayas. It is Said that, Guru Padmasambava, Indian Buddhist Master, came to a village nearby and saw people in trouble not to have fresh drinking water then he went to the lake, which was frozen and stuck the ground, thawing a large area of the lake. Gurudongmar Lake is revered as one of the 108 "Tso-Chen" of Sikkim Where holy deities reside

Tso Lahmo
At the High Altitude of 17,480 ft, Tso Lhamo is a fresh water lake situated at close proximity to the Tibetan border. Tso Lhamo is another one of the afore mentioned 109 "Tso Chen" of Sikkim. Fresh water of Lake is the main source of River Teesta and because it is so close to the border, to enter at this area civilians required and army approved permit.
Location: 190 Kms from Gangtok and just 3 kms from south of China Border.
Tso Moriri
Known by Tso Moriri Wetland Conservation Reserve, This part of Ladakh is Known as Trans-Himalayan Bio geographic Region. Lake offers to get the view of different type of flora and fauna aroud the lake side area. Lake and near by area is reserved by Indian Wildlife Association for research and study purpose. Lake is surrounded by cold desert of Ladakh.

Pangong Tso
A bollywood movie "3 Idiots" gave this lake a world wide popularity. Pangong Tso has sprawling length of 130 kms and width of 70 kms. when the lake freezes in winters, it offers visitors to walk on the surface. This is one of the popular lake between Indians.

Roopkund Lake
To reach there is not the cup of tea for everyone and revel the mystery of lake. A trek of 2 days take you to this lake where you can find bones of humans and animals near to lake. It is believed that during the olden times the journey of a king and his consorts was hindered by the bad weather near Roopkund Lake. Bones of human has lot more stories to share.

Bhrigu Lake
This spectacle of a lake sits tucked away towards the east of Rohtang Pass in Kullu Valley. The lake is named after the famous sage Maharishi Bhrigu, who meditated at this high altitude lake at 14000 ft above sea level. In the present days, it is a choicest destination for trekkers who wish to explore the pleasing isolated corners of the Himalayas.

Brahmatal Lake
One of the high altitude lake in the Garhwal - Kumaon Himalayas in India, Brahmatal is named after the Hindu god Brahma who is said to have meditated at this lake. The trek to the lake is a spectacular journey that gives an opportunity to witness the known himalayan peaks such as Nanda Ghunti and trishul from a close proximity.
Location: Lohajung is the starting point to reach Brahmatal Lake.
Gangabal Lake
Gangabal Lake is the highest lake in the kashmir Valley fed by surrounding majestic glaciers. It is an alpine high altitude lake that flows into the nearby Nundkol Lake, Which is equally beautiful. The lake is located midway on the Kashmir Great Lakes trek that takes you on an exclusive trek around the lakes in the region.
Location: The lake is location at the foothills of Mount Haramukh.
Prashar Lake
Named after the sage Prashar (Father of Ved Vyas), Prashar Lake is said to be the place where the mighty sage meditated. In the 14th century, a pagoda was built by Raja Ban Sen, giving this isolated meditation spot religious and spiritual validation. Along with the beautiful lake, the specific area is also well known for the stunning panoramic view it gives of the entire valley.
Location: 50 Kms from Mandi.
Dal Lake
Life line of Srinagar, this lake has become the part of the culture history and future of kashmiris. With floating gardens that feed the population, to a circumference decorated with historical buildings such as Hari Parbat, shankaracharya mandir, Hazratbal Dargah and Chashme Shahi, the Dal Lake stands as the last surviving symbol of secularism in Kahsmir. In winters, Lake offers a game called "Ice Hockey" to play on its surface.
